Episode 69: The Contagious Nature of Sin
Sunday Jul 05, 2020
Sunday Jul 05, 2020
In Podcast Episode 69, “The Contagious Nature of Sin,” Kim discusses the contagious nature of sin, as evidenced in Judges 18. In this age of the coronavirus, the spread of the virus has become a daily topic of conversation. Yet, how much more effective would Christ-followers be if they avoided sin with the same tenacity they are attempting to avoid the virus. Then, they would also be more concerned about influencing others to sin than they presently are.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 18:1-31 with the focal scripture of 27-31:
27 Then, with Micah’s idols and his priest, the men of Dan came to the town of Laish, whose people were peaceful and secure. They attacked with swords and burned the town to the ground. 28 There was no one to rescue the people, for they lived a great distance from Sidon and had no allies nearby. This happened in the valley near Beth-rehob. Then the people of the tribe of Dan rebuilt the town and lived there. 29 They renamed the town Dan after their ancestor, Israel’s son, but it had originally been called Laish. 30 Then they set up the carved image, and they appointed Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, as their priest. This family continued as priests for the tribe of Dan until the Exile. 31 So Micah’s carved image was worshiped by the tribe of Dan as long as the Tabernacle of God remained at Shiloh.
Supplemental Texts:
3 He returned the money to her, and she said, “I now dedicate these silver coins to the Lord. In honor of my son, I will have an image carved and an idol cast.”
4 So when he returned the money to his mother, she took 200 silver coins and gave them to a silversmith, who made them into an image and an idol. And these were placed in Micah’s house. 5 Micah set up a shrine for the idol, and he made a sacred ephod and some household idols. Then he installed one of his sons as his personal priest. (Judges 17:3-5)
6 But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea. (Matthew 18:6)
24 Don’t befriend angry people
or associate with hot-tempered people,
25 or you will learn to be like them
and endanger your soul. (Proverbs 22:24-25)
33 Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33)
10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. (Ephesians 6:10-18)

Episode 68: Desperate to Fill the God-Shaped Hole
Sunday Jun 28, 2020
Sunday Jun 28, 2020
In Podcast Episode 68, “Desperate to Fill the God-Shaped Hole,” Kim discusses the desperation of Micah and his generation to fill their God-shaped hole with anything or anyone.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 17:1-13 with the focal scripture of 3-6, 12-13:
3 He returned the money to her, and she said, “I now dedicate these silver coins to the Lord. In honor of my son, I will have an image carved and an idol cast.”
4 So when he returned the money to his mother, she took 200 silver coins and gave them to a silversmith, who made them into an image and an idol. And these were placed in Micah’s house. 5 Micah set up a shrine for the idol, and he made a sacred ephod and some household idols. Then he installed one of his sons as his personal priest.
6 In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.
12 So Micah installed the Levite as his personal priest, and he lived in Micah’s house. 13 “I know the Lord will bless me now,” Micah said, “because I have a Levite serving as my priest.”
Supplemental Texts:
3 “You must not have any other god but me.
4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. (Exodus 20:3-4)
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. (Romans 1:21-23)
19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. (James 2:19)

Sunday Jun 21, 2020
Sunday Jun 21, 2020
In Podcast Episode 67, “Blinded So I Could Truly See,” Kim discusses the physical blinding of Samson and how this led to him truly seeing through his spiritual eyes.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 16:21-31 with the focal scripture of 21-22:
21 So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison. 22 But before long, his hair began to grow back.
Other Resources:
One day when Samson was in Timnah, one of the Philistine women caught his eye. 2 When he returned home, he told his father and mother, “A young Philistine woman in Timnah caught my eye. I want to marry her. Get her for me.” (Judges 14:1-2)

Episode 66: He Didn't Realize the Lord Had Left Him
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
In Podcast Episode 66, “He Didn’t Realize the Lord Had Left Him,” Kim discusses the circumstances of Samson’s loss of physical strength, and, more importantly, the loss of spiritual connection.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 16:4-21 with the focal scripture of 20:
20 Then she cried out, “Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!”
When he woke up, he thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But he didn’t realize the Lord had left him.
Some of the saddest statements in scripture:
21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ (Matthew 7:21-23)
7 “Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer. (1 Samuel 8:7)
19 The disease grew worse and worse, and at the end of two years it caused his bowels to come out, and he died in agony. His people did not build a great funeral fire to honor him as they had done for his ancestors. 20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. No one was sorry when he died. They buried him in the City of David, but not in the royal cemetery. (2 Chronicles 21:19-20)

Episode 65: Look for a Miraculous Escape BEFORE You Sin
Sunday Jun 07, 2020
Sunday Jun 07, 2020
In Podcast Episode 65, “Look for a Miraculous Escape BEFORE You Sin,” Kim discusses the importance of looking for a way of escape from temptation BEFORE you fall into sin.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 16:1-3, with the focal scriptures of 3:
1 One day Samson went to the Philistine town of Gaza and spent the night with a prostitute. 2 Word soon spread that Samson was there, so the men of Gaza gathered together and waited all night at the town gates. They kept quiet during the night, saying to themselves, “When the light of morning comes, we will kill him.”
3 But Samson stayed in bed only until midnight. Then he got up, took hold of the doors of the town gate, including the two posts, and lifted them up, bar and all. He put them on his shoulders and carried them all the way to the top of the hill across from Hebron.
When you are struggling with the deep holes of life, consider praying one or more of these sentence prayers based on God's Word.
May I not yield to temptation but please rescue me from the evil one (Matthew 6:13).
Please keep me from being enticed and drug away by my own evil desires (James 1:14).
Please don't let me give into temptation (Luke 22:40).
When I am tempted, please remind me I will not be tempted more than I can stand. Please show me a way so that I can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Strengthen me to keep watch and pray so that I will not give in to temptation. (Matthew 26:41)
May I be godly and gently and humbly help others who have fallen into temptation. As I do, please protect me so I do not fall into the same temptation. (Galatians 6:1)
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(James 4:7)
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. (Matthew 6:13 ESV)

Episode 64: Your Unique Relationship with the Omnipotent God
Sunday May 31, 2020
Sunday May 31, 2020
In Podcast Episode 64, “Your Unique Relationship with the Omnipotent God,” Kim discusses the unique relationship between Samson and God. God wants to cultivate an intimate relationship with you and let His power be displayed through you. Are you willing to seek Him with your whole heart and intentionally cultivate your unique relationship with the omnipotent God?
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 15, with the focal scriptures of 3-5, 15, 18-19:
3 Samson said, “This time I cannot be blamed for everything I am going to do to you Philistines.” 4 Then he went out and caught 300 foxes. He tied their tails together in pairs, and he fastened a torch to each pair of tails. 5 Then he lit the torches and let the foxes run through the grain fields of the Philistines. He burned all their grain to the ground, including the sheaves and the uncut grain. He also destroyed their vineyards and olive groves.
15 Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it.
18 Samson was now very thirsty, and he cried out to the Lord, “You have accomplished this great victory by the strength of your servant. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of these pagans?” 19 So God caused water to gush out of a hollow in the ground at Lehi, and Samson was revived as he drank. Then he named that place “The Spring of the One Who Cried Out,” and it is still in Lehi to this day.
Additional Scriptures:
6 Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.
7 Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:6-9)

Episode 63: Manipulating the Riddler
Sunday May 24, 2020
Sunday May 24, 2020
In Podcast Episode 63, “Manipulating the Riddler,” Kim discusses how Samson, the Riddler, was manipulated into giving up the answer to his riddle. We each need to be on guard against this powerful and destructive tool.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 14:5-19, with the focal scriptures of 16-17:
16 So Samson’s wife came to him in tears and said, “You don’t love me; you hate me! You have given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”
“I haven’t even given the answer to my father or mother,” he replied. “Why should I tell you?” 17 So she cried whenever she was with him and kept it up for the rest of the celebration. At last, on the seventh day he told her the answer because she was tormenting him with her nagging. Then she explained the riddle to the young men.
Examples of Manipulation Tactics:
Taking advantage of someone’s fears
“If you love me, you would…”
Working the system (See Gen. 25:27-27:40)Find his weakness and aim for it (see Matthew 4:1-3);
Lies, half-truths, lies of omission, slight of hand;
It’s how you say it;

Episode 62: Stop Thinking with Your Eyes
Sunday May 17, 2020
Sunday May 17, 2020
In Podcast Episode 62, “Stop Thinking with Your Eyes,” Kim discusses the danger of allowing the cravings for what we see to lead us to sin and fall short of God’s purpose.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 14:1-4, with the focal scripture 3b:
1 One day when Samson was in Timnah, one of the Philistine women caught his eye. 2 When he returned home, he told his father and mother, “A young Philistine woman in Timnah caught my eye. I want to marry her. Get her for me.”
3 His father and mother objected. “Isn’t there even one woman in our tribe or among all the Israelites you could marry?” they asked. “Why must you go to the pagan Philistines to find a wife?”
But Samson told his father, “Get her for me! She looks good to me.” 4 His father and mother didn’t realize the Lord was at work in this, creating an opportunity to work against the Philistines, who ruled over Israel at that time.
“For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.” (1 John 2:16)
Other Biblical Texts:
Not to marry outside the Israelite nation (Exodus 34:15-17; Deuteronomy 7:1-4)
““You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. So if your eye—even your good eye —causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your hand—even your stronger hand —causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” (Matthew 5:27-30)
““What sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting. So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.” (Matthew 18:7-9)

Episode 61: Unnamed Mom: Known Intimately and Chosen by God
Sunday May 10, 2020
Sunday May 10, 2020
In Podcast Episode 61, “Unnamed Mom: Known Intimately and Chosen by God,” Kim discusses the story of Samson’s nameless mother who was known intimately and chosen by God.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 13:1-25, with the focal scriptures 3-5 and 23.
3 The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife and said, “Even though you have been unable to have children, you will soon become pregnant and give birth to a son. 4 So be careful; you must not drink wine or any other alcoholic drink nor eat any forbidden food. 5 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and his hair must never be cut. For he will be dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. He will begin to rescue Israel from the Philistines.”…
23 But his wife said, “If the Lord were going to kill us, he wouldn’t have accepted our burnt offering and grain offering. He wouldn’t have appeared to us and told us this wonderful thing and done these miracles.”
32 How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets. (Hebrews 11:32)

He Knows My Name
I have a maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hand
Chorus
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And hears me when I call
I have a Father
He calls me his own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go

Episode 60: Beware of Fighting the Wrong Opponent

Sunday May 03, 2020
In Podcast Episode 60, “Beware of Fighting the Wrong Opponent,” Kim discusses the conflict between Jephthah and the tribe of Ephraim. Instead of joining together to fight the true enemies of the Lord, many lives were lost fighting each other.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Judges 12:1-7, with the focal scriptures 1 and 6b.
1 Then the people of Ephraim mobilized an army and crossed over the Jordan River to Zaphon. They sent this message to Jephthah: “Why didn’t you call for us to help you fight against the Ammonites? We are going to burn down your house with you in it!”…6b Then they would take him and kill him at the shallow crossings of the Jordan. In all, 42,000 Ephraimites were killed at that time.
Compare to Judges 8:1-3.
1 Then the people of Ephraim asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us this way? Why didn’t you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites?” And they argued heatedly with Gideon.
2 But Gideon replied, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t even the leftover grapes of Ephraim’s harvest better than the entire crop of my little clan of Abiezer? 3 God gave you victory over Oreb and Zeeb, the commanders of the Midianite army. What have I accomplished compared to that?” When the men of Ephraim heard Gideon’s answer, their anger subsided.

Dear Lord,
I pray that from Your glorious, unlimited resources You will empower each listener with inner strength through Your Spirit. May You make Your home in her(/his) heart as she trusts in You. May her roots grow down into Your love and keep her strong. And may she have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is. May she experience Your love, though it is too great to understand fully. Then may she be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You. Now all glory to You, who is able, through Your mighty power at work within her, to accomplish infinitely more than she might ask or think. (Ephesians 3:16-20 Personalized Prayer)
