Ep. 99: If You Want to Return to the Lord with All Your Heart
Sunday Jan 31, 2021
Sunday Jan 31, 2021
In Podcast Episode 99, “If You Want to Return to the Lord with All Your Heart,” Kim discusses the instructions Samuel gave the Israelites on how to return to the Lord with all of their hearts and how his advice is still applicable today.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 7:1-9, with the key verse being 3:
3 Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”
If you want to return to the Lord:
Come with ALL of your heart;5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Get rid of all idols;14 So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. (I Corinthians 10:14)
Turn your heart to the Lord;13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. (Jeremiah 29:13)
Obey God alone.15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. (John 14:15)

Ep. 98: Don't Just Glance But Gaze at the God Who Sees You
Sunday Jan 24, 2021
Sunday Jan 24, 2021
In Podcast Episode 98, “Don’t Just Glance But Gaze at the God Who Sees You,” Kim discusses the dangers of only glances in God’s direction and never really seeing Him for who He is. Both the Philistines and the Israelite people of Beth-shemesh had the opportunity to be in God’s presence and to experience Him, but both missed their opportunities. The Philistines never acknowledged Him as the One True God and the people of Beth-shemesh treated the Ark more like a carnival attraction than the presence of God.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 6:1-21, with the key verses being 1 and 19:
1 The Ark of the Lord remained in Philistine territory seven months in all.
19 But the Lord killed seventy men from Beth-shemesh because they looked into the Ark of the Lord. And the people mourned greatly because of what the Lord had done.

Ep. 97: The Lord's Heavy Hand
Sunday Jan 17, 2021
Sunday Jan 17, 2021
In Podcast Episode 97, “The Lord’s Heavy Hand,” Kim discusses the unique story of the ark of God within the Philistine territory. The ark in the temple of Dagon is a story unlike any other in scripture. The Israelites had so lost their focus on God that their enemies did not recognize who the God of Israel even was. Instead of the witness of a grateful people pointing others, including the Philistines, to the One True God, it took the Lord’s heavy hand to point them in His direction.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 5:1-12, with the key verses being 6 and 9:
6 Then the Lord’s heavy hand struck the people of Ashdod and the nearby villages with a plague of tumors.
9 But when the Ark arrived at Gath, the Lord’s heavy hand fell on its men, young and old; he struck them with a plague of tumors, and there was a great panic.

Ep. 96: The Glory Has Departed
Sunday Jan 10, 2021
Sunday Jan 10, 2021
In Podcast Episode 96, “The Glory Has Departed,” Kim discusses the departure of the glory of God from the Israelite people. The people of God, including the High Priest and his sons, had failed to live for God and glorify Him with their lives and ministries. They took for granted God would always be accessible to them, no matter their attitudes and actions.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 4:12-22, with the key verses being 13, 21-22:
13 Eli was waiting beside the road to hear the news of the battle, for his heart trembled for the safety of the Ark of God. When the messenger arrived and told what had happened, an outcry resounded throughout the town.
21 She named the child Ichabod (which means “Where is the glory?”), for she said, “Israel’s glory is gone.” She named him this because the Ark of God had been captured and because her father-in-law and husband were dead. 22 Then she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured.”

Ep. 95: Your One Word, God-honoring Theme for 2021
Sunday Jan 03, 2021
Sunday Jan 03, 2021
In Podcast Episode 95, “Your One Word, God-honoring Theme for 2021,” Kim discusses the “One Word” annual challenge and how God can use this to help focus your spiritual growth journey in 2021. Just as we are entering a new season of life, as 2021 begins, the Israelites were continuing their preparation for moving from their wilderness years to the Promised Land. Moses’ wise words to them could easily be applied to your life, as you proceed further in your journey toward Christlikeness.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Deuteronomy 10:12-21:
12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. 13 And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.
14 “Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the Lord your God. 15 Yet the Lord chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today. 16 Therefore, change your hearts and stop being stubborn.
17 “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. 18 He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. 19 So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. 20 You must fear the Lord your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. 21 He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes.

Ep. 94: 2020 in Review: Remember How the Lord Your God Led You
Sunday Dec 27, 2020
Sunday Dec 27, 2020
In Podcast Episode 94, “2020 in Review: Remember How the Lord Your God Led You,” Kim discusses the value of taking time to stop at the end of each year and remember just how the Lord has led you. And, although 2020 has been a year for the ages, this does not mean you do not need to take time and look for all God has done in the midst of the challenges.
The primary scripture text for this episode is Deuteronomy 8:2-5.
2 Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. 3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. 5 Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.

Ep. 93: The Lord of Heaven's Armies Is Not at Your Beck and Call
Sunday Dec 20, 2020
Sunday Dec 20, 2020
In Podcast Episode 93, “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies Is Not at Your Beck and Call,” Kim discusses the belief that the God of the universe can be accessed from a position of human pride. There are big differences between truly seeking God and only seeking Him for what He can do for you. In today’s story, the Israelites acted as though the Lord of Heaven’s Armies was at their beck and call, and, instead of an automatic victory, this led to a humiliating defeat.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 4:1-11, with focal verses 3-5.
1 And Samuel’s words went out to all the people of Israel.
At that time Israel was at war with the Philistines. The Israelite army was camped near Ebenezer, and the Philistines were at Aphek. 2 The Philistines attacked and defeated the army of Israel, killing 4,000 men. 3 After the battle was over, the troops retreated to their camp, and the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord allow us to be defeated by the Philistines?” Then they said, “Let’s bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord from Shiloh. If we carry it into battle with us, it will save us from our enemies.”
4 So they sent men to Shiloh to bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the cherubim. Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, were also there with the Ark of the Covenant of God. 5 When all the Israelites saw the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord coming into the camp, their shout of joy was so loud it made the ground shake!
6 “What’s going on?” the Philistines asked. “What’s all the shouting about in the Hebrew camp?” When they were told it was because the Ark of the Lord had arrived, 7 they panicked. “The gods have come into their camp!” they cried. “This is a disaster! We have never had to face anything like this before! 8 Help! Who can save us from these mighty gods of Israel? They are the same gods who destroyed the Egyptians with plagues when Israel was in the wilderness. 9 Fight as never before, Philistines! If you don’t, we will become the Hebrews’ slaves just as they have been ours! Stand up like men and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought desperately, and Israel was defeated again. The slaughter was great; 30,000 Israelite soldiers died that day. The survivors turned and fled to their tents. 11 The Ark of God was captured, and Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were killed.

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Ep. 92: Don't Hold Anything Back
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
In Podcast Episode 92, “Don’t Hold Anything Back,” Kim discusses some of the challenges of living for God, and, specifically, speaking for God. Although Samuel was very young and this was the first message he had heard from God, he didn’t hold anything back and served as a faithful mouthpiece of the Lord. This was just the first of many messages Samuel would faithfully deliver from God during his lifetime.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 3:15-21, with focal verses 18b.
15 Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then got up and opened the doors of the Tabernacle as usual. He was afraid to tell Eli what the Lord had said to him. 16 But Eli called out to him, “Samuel, my son.”
“Here I am,” Samuel replied.
17 “What did the Lord say to you? Tell me everything. And may God strike you and even kill you if you hide anything from me!” 18 So Samuel told Eli everything; he didn’t hold anything back. “It is the Lord’s will,” Eli replied. “Let him do what he thinks best.”
19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable. 20 And all Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh and gave messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.
SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:
15 Moses continued, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you yourselves requested of the Lord your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said, ‘Don’t let us hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore or see this blazing fire, for we will die.’
17 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘What they have said is right. 18 I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him. 19 I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf. 20 But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name or who speaks in the name of another god must die.’
21 “But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the Lord?’ 22 If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.(Deuteronomy 18:15-22)
25 From the day your ancestors left Egypt until now, I have continued to send my servants, the prophets—day in and day out. 26 But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful—even worse than their ancestors. (Jeremiah 7:25-26)
11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way. (Matthew 5:11-12)
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests;
Samuel also called on his name.
They cried to the Lord for help,
and he answered them.
7 He spoke to Israel from the pillar of cloud,
and they followed the laws and decrees he gave them. (Psalm 99:6-7)

Ep. 91: Speak, Lord, Your Servant Is Listening
Sunday Dec 06, 2020
Sunday Dec 06, 2020
In Podcast Episode 91, “Speak, Lord, Your Servant Is Listening,” Kim discusses the privilege of actively and humbly listening to the Lord’s voice. “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening” is a great prayer to pray on a daily basis. Yet, please don’t call Him “Lord” and ask Him to speak if you are not fully committed to do WHATEVER He says. This prayer is a prayer of humble submission, as much as it is a request to hear the voice of the Living God.

The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 3:1-14, with focal verses 9-10:
1 Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the Lord by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.
2 One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle near the Ark of God. 4 Suddenly the Lord called out, “Samuel!”
“Yes?” Samuel replied. “What is it?” 5 He got up and ran to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”
“I didn’t call you,” Eli replied. “Go back to bed.” So he did.
6 Then the Lord called out again, “Samuel!”
Again Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”
“I didn’t call you, my son,” Eli said. “Go back to bed.”
7 Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before. 8 So the Lord called a third time, and once more Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”
Then Eli realized it was the Lord who was calling the boy. 9 So he said to Samuel, “Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed.
10 And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!”
And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”
11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “I am about to do a shocking thing in Israel. 12 I am going to carry out all my threats against Eli and his family, from beginning to end. 13 I have warned him that judgment is coming upon his family forever, because his sons are blaspheming God and he hasn’t disciplined them. 14 So I have vowed that the sins of Eli and his sons will never be forgiven by sacrifices or offerings.”
SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:
1 “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.” (John 10:1-5)
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd. (John 10:14-16)

Ep. 90: Dangers of Honoring Anyone More Than God
Sunday Nov 29, 2020
Sunday Nov 29, 2020
In Podcast Episode 90, “Dangers of Honoring Anyone More Than God,” Kim discusses the temptation each of us faces to honor anyone, including ourselves, more than we honor God. Eli had not set a godly example for his sons in how he handled his duties as priest, but also in how he honored them above God.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 2:22-36 with focal verse 29:
22 Now Eli was very old, but he was aware of what his sons were doing to the people of Israel. He knew, for instance, that his sons were seducing the young women who assisted at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 23 Eli said to them, “I have been hearing reports from all the people about the wicked things you are doing. Why do you keep sinning? 24 You must stop, my sons! The reports I hear among the Lord’s people are not good. 25 If someone sins against another person, God can mediate for the guilty party. But if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede?” But Eli’s sons wouldn’t listen to their father, for the Lord was already planning to put them to death.
26 Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with the Lord and with the people.
27 One day a man of God came to Eli and gave him this message from the Lord: “I revealed myself to your ancestors when they were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. 28 I chose your ancestor Aaron from among all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer sacrifices on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the priestly vest as he served me. And I assigned the sacrificial offerings to you priests. 29 So why do you scorn my sacrifices and offerings? Why do you give your sons more honor than you give me—for you and they have become fat from the best offerings of my people Israel!
30 “Therefore, the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I promised that your branch of the tribe of Levi would always be my priests. But I will honor those who honor me, and I will despise those who think lightly of me. 31 The time is coming when I will put an end to your family, so it will no longer serve as my priests. All the members of your family will die before their time. None will reach old age. 32 You will watch with envy as I pour out prosperity on the people of Israel. But no members of your family will ever live out their days. 33 The few not cut off from serving at my altar will survive, but only so their eyes can go blind and their hearts break, and their children will die a violent death. 34 And to prove that what I have said will come true, I will cause your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, to die on the same day!
35 “Then I will raise up a faithful priest who will serve me and do what I desire. I will establish his family, and they will be priests to my anointed kings forever. 36 Then all of your surviving family will bow before him, begging for money and food. ‘Please,’ they will say, ‘give us jobs among the priests so we will have enough to eat.’”
SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:
25 A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:25-27)
37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. 39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. (Matthew 10:37-39)
34 “Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? 35 Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!” (Luke 14:34)

Dear Lord,
I pray that from Your glorious, unlimited resources You will empower each listener with inner strength through Your Spirit. May You make Your home in her(/his) heart as she trusts in You. May her roots grow down into Your love and keep her strong. And may she have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is. May she experience Your love, though it is too great to understand fully. Then may she be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You. Now all glory to You, who is able, through Your mighty power at work within her, to accomplish infinitely more than she might ask or think. (Ephesians 3:16-20 Personalized Prayer)
