Sunday Oct 09, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 187, “Create in Me a Clean Heart,” Kim discusses importance of responding to the Lord’s conviction with a broken and repentant spirit. David’s willingness to expose his brokenness for all Israel to see and learn from is inspiring. Also, using his words to pray for the hearts of others is a practical application of the text also.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:13 and Psalm 51 with 10, 12, and 17 as the focal verses:
“Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.” (2 Samuel 12:13)
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you. (Psalm 51:12)
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. (Psalm 51:17)
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:
Pray this: “Lord, please create in me a clean heart and renew a loyal spirit within me. Please restore to me the joy of Your salvation and make me willing to obey You.”

Ep. 186: The Art of Godly Confrontation
Sunday Oct 02, 2022
Sunday Oct 02, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 186, “The Art of Godly Confrontation,” Kim discusses the confrontation between the prophet Nathan and King David. Confrontation is something the majority of us would rather avoid, but sometimes it is necessary.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:1-12 with 1-4 as the focal verses.
1 So the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to tell David this story: “There were two men in a certain town. One was rich, and one was poor. 2 The rich man owned a great many sheep and cattle. 3 The poor man owned nothing but one little lamb he had bought. He raised that little lamb, and it grew up with his children. It ate from the man’s own plate and drank from his cup. He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter. 4 One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it and prepared it for his guest.”
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:

Ep. 185: Operation Royal Cover-Up
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
Sunday Sep 25, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 185, “Operation Royal Cover-Up,” Kim discusses the repeated attempts by King David to cover up his adulterous taking of Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. It is terribly sad to see all the sins committed by David in his attempts to cover up his affair and all those he involved in the cover-up. Prayerfully consider how you acted as David, either attempting to cover up your own sins or assisting others in covering theirs.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11:1-27 with 6-7, 12-13, and 14-15 as the focal verses.
6 Then David sent word to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the army were getting along and how the war was progressing.
12 “Well, stay here today,” David told him, “and tomorrow you may return to the army.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he couldn’t get Uriah to go home to his wife. Again he slept at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard.
14 So the next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver. 15 The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
3 When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.
4 Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude
5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt.I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude (Ps. 32:3-5)
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:

Ep. 184: Perceived Personal Power Can Lead to Spiritual Numbness
Sunday Sep 18, 2022
Sunday Sep 18, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 184, “Perceived Personal Power Can Lead to Spiritual Numbness,” Kim discusses the dangers of bowing to the idol of personal power. King David had moved from the teenage boy standing up to the bully Goliath only in the power of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies to a king abusing his power in a sexual manner. This week’s study has caused Kim to see the story of David and Bathsheba in a whole new, concerning light.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11:3-5 with 4 as the focal verse.
4 Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home.
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! (1 Samuel 17:45-46)
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:
Reflect upon the power differential between King David and Bathsheba. What are some modern-day examples?
Additional Resources:
“In our members there is a slumbering inclination towards desire which is both sudden and fierce. With irresistible power, desire seizes mastery over the flesh. All at once a secret, smoldering fire is kindled. The flesh burns and is in flames…Joy in God is…extinguished in us and we seek all our joy in the creature. At this moment God is quite unreal to us…Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God…The lust thus aroused enveloped the mind and will of man in deepest darkness. The powers of clear discrimination and of decision are taken from us…It is here that everything within me rises up against the word of God.” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Creation and Fall: Temptation, Two Biblical Studies, pg. 33)

Sunday Sep 11, 2022
Sunday Sep 11, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 183, “Do You Run Toward Temptation or Away?,” Kim discusses the importance of avoiding temptation when possible and running far, far away when you come across temptation anyway. Kim contrasts King David and Joseph’s responses to sexual temptation.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11 with 2-3 as focal verses.
2 Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. 3 He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

Sunday Sep 04, 2022
Sunday Sep 04, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 182, “Idle Hands Are the Devil’s Workshop,” Kim discusses the importance of staying alert and watching out for the devil’s schemes. If you stay fully focused on working at all things as unto the Lord should give little opportunity to wander off course.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11 with 1-2 as the focal verses.
1 In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
2 Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. (Colossians 3:23)
8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

Ep. 181: Two People Are Better Off Than One
Sunday Aug 28, 2022
Sunday Aug 28, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 181, “Two People Are Better Off Than One,” Kim discusses the importance of being a reliable companion on whom others can lean in times of trouble. In today’s lesson, we see Israel’s military commander Joab devising a battle plan which includes him heavily leaning on his brother Abishai. We also see that it is not a one-sided relationship, but they truly will have each other’s backs if they come up against an enemy which is more than they can handle on their own. Are you the reliable type? What better way to show the love of Christ than to be there for others in their times of need, covering their backs as they will also be willing to cover yours?
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 10:9-12 with 11 as the focal verse.
11 “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come and help you.
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)
For we are each responsible for our own conduct. (Galatians 6:5)
Aaron and Hur support Moses’ arms
12 Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. Exodus 17:12

Ep. 180: A Piece of Seemingly Harmless Advice Can Destroy Many Lives
Sunday Aug 21, 2022
Sunday Aug 21, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 180, “A Piece of Seemingly Harmless Advice Can Destroy Many Lives,” Kim discusses the dangers which can occur when giving and/or receiving faulty advice. How many times have you provided advice without taking time to pray? If you have a tendency to verbally vomit “I think you should,” you should strongly consider meditating on Proverbs 18, and asking the Lord to show you how you may have provided faulty advice to others.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 10:5-19 with 18 as the focal verse.
18 But again the Arameans fled from the Israelites. This time David’s forces killed 700 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, including Shobach, the commander of their army.
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
2 Fools have no interest in understanding;
they only want to air their own opinions. (Proverbs 18:2)
4 Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook. (Proverbs 18:4)
6 Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.
7 The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips. (Proverbs 18:6-7)
17 The first to speak in court sounds right—
until the cross-examination begins. (Proverbs 18:17)
20 Wise words satisfy like a good meal;
the right words bring satisfaction. 21 The tongue can bring death or life;
those who love to talk will reap the consequences. (Proverbs 18:20-21)
2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.
But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. (James 3:2-6)

Ep. 179: Wise People Think Before They Act
Sunday Aug 14, 2022
Sunday Aug 14, 2022
SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 179, “Wise People Think Before They Act,” Kim discusses the dangers of accepting the opinions of others as fact and acting without thinking logically, researching thoroughly, and praying fervently. King David sent messengers on a Kindness Campaign to Ammon, but instead of being overwhelmed by David’s kind gesture, King Hanun acted in a manner that began the war. His rash decision was influenced by the foolish advice of his military commanders. When have you taken the advice of others to heart and acted in a manner which cost you or others dearly?
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 10:1-4 with 3-4 as the focal verses.
3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, their master, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the city so they can come in and conquer it!” 4 So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.

15 A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction.
16 Wise people think before they act;
fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness. (Proverbs 13:14-16)
20 Walk with the wise and become wise;
associate with fools and get in trouble. (Proverbs 13:20)
33 Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33)

May God honor this personalized scripture prayer in the life of each listener:
Dear Lord,
I pray that from Your glorious, unlimited resources You will empower each listener with inner strength through Your Spirit. May You make Your home in her(/his) heart as she trusts in You. May her roots grow down into Your love and keep her strong. And may she have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is. May she experience Your love, though it is too great to understand fully. Then may she be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You. Now all glory to You, who is able, through Your mighty power at work within her, to accomplish infinitely more than she might ask or think. (Ephesians 3:16-20 Personalized Prayer)
