SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 185, “Operation Royal Cover-Up,” Kim discusses the repeated attempts by King David to cover up his adulterous taking of Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. It is terribly sad to see all the sins committed by David in his attempts to cover up his affair and all those he involved in the cover-up. Prayerfully consider how you acted as David, either attempting to cover up your own sins or assisting others in covering theirs.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11:1-27 with 6-7, 12-13, and 14-15 as the focal verses.
6 Then David sent word to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the army were getting along and how the war was progressing.
12 “Well, stay here today,” David told him, “and tomorrow you may return to the army.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he couldn’t get Uriah to go home to his wife. Again he slept at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard.
14 So the next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver. 15 The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
3 When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
4 Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude
5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude (Ps. 32:3-5)
