SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 180, “A Piece of Seemingly Harmless Advice Can Destroy Many Lives,” Kim discusses the dangers which can occur when giving and/or receiving faulty advice. How many times have you provided advice without taking time to pray? If you have a tendency to verbally vomit “I think you should,” you should strongly consider meditating on Proverbs 18, and asking the Lord to show you how you may have provided faulty advice to others.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 10:5-19 with 18 as the focal verse.
18 But again the Arameans fled from the Israelites. This time David’s forces killed 700 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, including Shobach, the commander of their army.
ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:
2 Fools have no interest in understanding;
they only want to air their own opinions. (Proverbs 18:2)
4 Wise words are like deep waters;
wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook. (Proverbs 18:4)
6 Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels;
they are asking for a beating.
7 The mouths of fools are their ruin;
they trap themselves with their lips. (Proverbs 18:6-7)
17 The first to speak in court sounds right—
until the cross-examination begins. (Proverbs 18:17)
20 Wise words satisfy like a good meal;
the right words bring satisfaction. 21 The tongue can bring death or life;
those who love to talk will reap the consequences. (Proverbs 18:20-21)
2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.
But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. (James 3:2-6)
